簡評：
如果讀者期待這本書提供單一或一貫的論旨或歷史教訓，那也許會有些失望。畢竟這不是像Philippe Ari眤s的Centuries of Childhood那樣有個特定鮮明破除常識的驚人論旨貫穿全書、並力圖向讀者證明。但是這本書的某些個別章節倒有可看之處，並且讓我們了解很多歷史事實。例如，過去的人（16-18世 紀英國人）既有早婚者，也有晚婚者，端視家中排行而定。此外，人們可能認為歷史上的父權體制一直是沒有變化的存在著，但是這本書顯示父權體制有較強與較弱 的變化起伏，並不是一直靜止的。本書有些章節主題所提供的歷史圖像可說是複雜（或凌亂），很難歸納出一個齊一的趨勢，很多矛盾現象均凌亂地並存。但是也許 這就是複雜歷史社會的實相。
